Student Mobility

The course is designed with planned mobility criteria, meant to allow candidates to exploit the full potential of the consortium. For that purpose, courses have been consensually allocated within the consortium following criteria of strategic interest, available human and material resources, institutional track record and societal considerations.

EMJMD NURSING 1st semester courses will be offered by the University of Algarve and the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Santarem, the Portuguese partner Institutions. In order to mark the multicultural character from the beginning, professors from all four partner Universities will be participating.

The ESSUALG have a group of teachers whose curriculums either in scope of teaching or in the context of clinical practice is relevant to the area of child health and particularly in emergency care and care to child in a critical situation. In addition, the partnership work we have been developing with the Faro Hospital gives us the opportunity to benefit from collaboration, for the theoretical part of the EMMECC NURSING, of professionals with vast experience in the Paediatric Emergency and Child Critical care. We can also develop clinical training in forefront units: Paediatric Emergency Department and Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (in process of certification to NIDCAP Unit).

In the area of management, communication and relationships in Nursing ESSUALG also has four PhD nursing professors that have been working and researching over the last years in this field, with several national and international publications and theses orientations.

The IPS School promotes the 1st semester of the degree, constantly developing the articulation with UNIOVI as coordinator institution. The qualification of professors in association with the EMMECC NURSING, as well as the experience gathered from the completion of master degrees within the nature presented here, are strong points through which IPS contributes to the success we aim to achieve.

In the 2nd semester students will move either to Spain or to UK to follow Evidence Based Nursing Practice modules, depending on their study track of interest:

  • Both Universities will offer the core Clinical Practice modules; when it comes to the elective modules, the University of Oviedo will be offering specialization in Adult or Paediatric Emergency and Critical Care, whereas the Edinburg Napier University will be offering Work based learning Critical Care and Crisis Resource Management .
  • The University of Oviedo has long experience in offering advanced nurse education in Adult or Paediatric Emergency and Critical Care. In fact, programmes of specialization in these areas have been developed during the last 20 years in the case of Adult Emergency and Critical Care and during the last 15 years in the case of Paediatric Critical Care. Therefore, the University of Oviedo has professors with experience in this field, as well as, Adult, Paediatric and Neonatal Emergency and Critical Care Units with a consistent educational programme for nurses.
  • Edinburg Napier University has strong competence, long experience, and functional cooperation with hospitals and emergency care organizations regionally in the field of emergency and critical care nursing. Edinburg Napier University has versatile and advanced learning centres for emergency and critical care simulation and evidence based practice in nursing. Edinburg Napier University has long experience in master-level education in management and leadership in health care and crisis resource management.

The 3rd semester is dedicated to the students Master Thesis, based on a practicum in further specialization on specific Emergency and Intensive Care issues; that specialization will be available at all partner Universities and associated partner organizations. It may therefore involve a second mobility moment, although that is not mandatory and the 3rd semester can be completed at the same institution where the 2nd semester took place –if the candidate chooses so.

The University of Oviedo will offer during the third semester further specialization in oncologic and transplant. This specialization will provide effective nursing staff for these specific units. Moreover, students will experience new specific aspects in the care of critically ill patients that are usually admitted in Isolated Units which are not permitted for general students.

Edinburg Napier University's further specialisation will focus on Emergency Simulation and Advanced Evidence-based Practice, two areas in which the institution traditionally excels:

  • Edinburg Napier University administers four full-scale simulation rooms, control rooms, classrooms used for debriefing.
  • Edinburg Napier University prepares students to act according to evidence based process, to collect, to evaluate and use different data sources critically. The ultimate goal is that students adopt this style of approach into their daily work.

After the 1st semester, the IPS School and its internship partner (Santarem Hospital), as well as the Algarve University and its internship partner (Faro Hospital) propose themselves as training alternatives focused on areas on which they traditionally excel.

Application period closed on December 31st.
